While we were at L'abri we were there with quite a few people from the south. Almost all of them could hardly believe we had never been to a Waffle House. Waffle House is this wonderfully magical chain of restaurants where they serve good food at a better price. We were tempted to stop in at one many times along the road and finally did in Little Rock, AK. It was about 4, apparently a slow time as we were the only customers in there. The service was great- Renae treated us real nice. We enjoyed some waffles and a mighty fine cup of coffee. The experience couldn't have been better.

Now that we are in California, I'm not sure we'll have another opportunity to get to one. The last one we saw was in Dallas.

Well it was just another manic monday for jeff and austen. We left our friend josh's at 7am (which meant getting up at 6am...) to take our other friend ben to the bus station and so we could get on the road again! We made our way to Washington DC before lunch and decided to look around! Neither of us had ever been there, so it was quite the experience. The abraham lincoln memorial, washington monument and others! here's a video from the WWII memorial:

now we are in the "rodeside inn" in roanoke virginia! its a pretty classy place. we had kinda planned on camping tonight, but hit some serious snow/fog/bad weather on the way, so we splurged for the $60 hotel!

anyway, it was a full day, and we hope to get to Nashville tomorrow to visit our friend June! Stay tuned.

Apparently I'm (Jeff) a famous person magnet because we saw Alec Baldwin when we were in the city. That puts me at 2 for 2 as far as famous person sitings in New York go.

On the Road Again

We packed up and left L'abri this morning and made our way down to the Big Apple. It was sad to leave after making so many good friends and great memories, but we're looking forward to our impending trek. We're currently in Queens at my (Jeff) cousins apartment and plan to spend the day in the city tomorrow. This is a quick update and the beginning of a more consistent account of our travels as gallivant across the country.

As a canadian in america though, i am very excited about the upcoming election! i think it's pretty cool that i will be here during this momentus time! the countdown is on. oh and american thanksgiving, looking forward to that too. the other countdown is on.

Just a quick update while I'm (jeff) at the library. Not too much to report- we took a day trip up to Maine last Thursdays (pictures to come) and we were lucky enough to attend a good Lutheran church for Reformation Sunday. A high emphasis on Lutheran. It was good. I'm not good at multi-tasking. more later.

Last thursday we made a little trip to the city to do some exploring. A good was had by one and all. We met up with Mishka (who had spent some time with us at l'abri) before she flew back to Slovakia! The Girls didn't shop as much as we thought they would, but fortunately Anna found some shoes. She was in dire need, or so she says. We also saw bandana's in a "second hand" store, they were $150. yikes. Oh, and as was afforementioned, Jeff and Josh happened upon Halle Berry. Just another day in the big apple.

Finally an update to anyone still checking the blog!

We've been living in Southborough at L'abri for almost 3 weeks now! There's about 15 other guys and gals living with us in the 19th century Massachusetts Mansion! So far it's been a pretty neat experience and we've met some interesting people! For those of you who we haven't explained L'abri to, we're not going to now. or ever. it's too hard to explain. essentially we're living in a commune out here. Our day consists of individual study time, household and outdoor work, 3 meals, lots of tea breaks and the odd lecture and discussion. We quite enjoy the pace as it is relatively slow. everyone's pretty relaxed, and the people that run the show have a good attidue about life.

All in all we're enjoying ourselves. time seems to be going be slow and fast at the same time. it doesn't feel like we've been here all that long, but time is flying. at the same time.

Boston

We've been in Boston for a couple days now. We're staying at some friends of mine (Jeff) here, Eric is attending seminary just north of Boston. Last night we got to see Ryan Adams in concert. It was a killer show. Absolutely stellar. Today we enjoyed being able to sleep in this morning and being in one place for more than one night. Austen and I took a little trip into Boston- strolled around Harvard drove around downtown, made our way out to the airport, etc. etc.

Anna has made it in safe and sound and seems to have had a good first flight experience. We head out to L'abri tomorrow so this could be the last post for a few days, we'll see.

After a wonderful day of travelling and visiting Austen's friends, we made it to our destination of Kingston, Ontario. We made stops in Detroit, a lovely visit with Laurie in London, and we got to see Austen's friend Rob in Toronto. We were greeted in Kingston by Austen's relatives and a dynamite meal prepared by Marlene. It really hit the spot after a long day on the road. After supper and light table talk, we took a fun walk around of Kingston lead by Joel, with many interesting facts included. Kingston is sweet. Did you know it is Canada's original choice for capital city? Neither of us did.

Ironically the pictures of Kingston will be on the next post, as the ones we had got accidentily deleted... so we're taking more in the morning. stay tuned. and don't be afraid to comment, it's twelve o'clock and no one has even acknowledged that we blogged last night. at a very late hour. a little encouragement please and thank you.

We drove nearly 500 miles today from Minneapolis to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Stopping for fuel at various locations and lunch in Janesville, DQ of course. We conquered the mighty Chicago, it was no problem. Although we did inch along in rush hour for about an hour...

The trip is going well so far. The roads are good and the traffic is fair. Our plan is to hit up London, Toronto, and Kingston tomorrow. We'll stay at Austen's relatives in Kingston for the night!

We apologize for the lack of exciting-ness in this blog. We rolled into Ann Arbor pretty late and are planning to get and early start tomorrow. sooooo this is just a temporary blog to tide you over till tomorrow, when we will blog for real.

Anyhow, tell your friends the blog is back. and if you get a chance call Austen's mom, Karen, tomorrow. it's her birthday. seriously, call her.

Give Me a Good Reason Not To

I gave blood today. It was awesome, as usual. Except for this stupid lady who was in-front of me in line. We were sitting in a row of chairs and as people were called to give blood we would move down towards the end. The way it went was like move down one and then right away again and then wait 10 minutes and then move down and then immediately again and then wait. Kind of annoying, but whatever. So we get to the end of the chairs me, this lady in front of me and the lady ahead of her and a cot opens up so the lady on the end leaves, leaving the lady and I and an open chairs and several other people behind me. Now, this lady wasn't morbidly obese, but she wasn't thin, either. She looks at me and looks down the line of chairs and says something about how she's not going to move over one chair. ONE CHAIR! Lady, it's not that big of nuisance. A minute later someone needed a place to sit, so she was FORCED to move down and moments later she was called. I just don't understand some people. Now go give blood.

Hello blog world!

I'm here to tell you all about the wonderful weekend I had out at Pretty Hill (Armena area). The Olson family put on another wonderful film festival. I, among others, enjoyed 13 different films from all over the world and from many different decades. The movie that received the highest rating was Once, an Irish film about friendship, you could say. The highlight of the weekend was of course spending it in good company. I got to hang out with Mr. Graham Jensen and Ms. Jannaya Friggstad all weekend, which was most satisfactory. Here is a lovely picutre that I took of them on my new camera.

Also, Parker and I are hopefully coming out to Saskatoon for the weekend, so heads up all of you in Saskatoon.

indeed, i am sick

Well it's official - I am sick. Oddly enough it hasn't just blown over either. Usually I don't get sick, and if i do, it's for a day - two. But as today draws to a close, it is now 4 days. Headache and sore throat mostly, a little stuffiness and now losing of voice. i think i should be coming out of it pretty soon though, so i feel good about that. Both Heather and Avey prescribed Cold Fx, but I'm not a believer... to be fair I've never tried it. and to be fair again, I've only heard good things, but still. I've just been drinking a lot of tea with lemon and honey. taking the odd advil now and then. oh and vitamin c pills courtesy of Heather. I was eating them like candy, when she told me to cut back, as you can OD and get the runs... the jury is still out on that one.
Anyway, I have a mid term tomorrow and friday. If i don't do well at least i can blame it on the sickness.

Terrible Sleep

I had the worst sleep ever last night. It's been a really long time since I didn't enjoy my sleep - ever night I am loving life as soon as I get into bed. I didn't do much of anything yesterday, slept in, read, ate. I didn't actually leave the house till 9:30 at night to go return a movie and cruise around for a bit. When I got home I was quite tired, so went to bed before 12! Thinking I would have a nice long peaceful sleep, catching up for my lack of it during the week. No such luck. I kept having these weird dreams about indoor soccer and science. and climbing shelves like a climbing wall. I don't know. anyway, I woke up at like 4:30, 7:00, and 8:40 and got out of bed at 9! it's now 10:12. church isn't for another hour! oh not to mention when i got out of bed my head hurt and i was all achey. i hope its not the flu.

i'm having troubles studying. enough troubles to blog about it. enough trouble to go on the internet and find a picture of the cover of my text book.

i'm assuming i'm not alone on this one. we've all been there. the day(s) you know you need to study, but just can't. you have that feeling in your stomach, like you know unless you do some hardcore studying, you will not do well on the test. i have two of these test coming up, thursday and saturday morning. two of my more difficult classes all semester, so i really do need to buckle down here.
but i just hate it. self-discipline is a problem for me. so it's like putting a kid in a candy shop - hey austen, school's done, you don't HAVE to do anything until test days, just show up and write. so i have all this "free" time, and all the sudden the weather gods smiled upon us, it's a balmy -13 out. ahh.
that is all. enjoy your lives. i know i'm enjoying mine.

On Perogies

Last night I made myself some perogies for supper. They were delicious. I know that to most of you this sounds like no big deal, but it was for me, because it was my first time ever making them! You see perogies are not really a big thing in the states- the first time I ever ate them was at CLBI. I had heard of them before that from a friend of mine who lived in Montana and I was quite excited the first time we had them- and probably every time after that.

Last year when I lived in Moorhead it was the first time I had to cook for myself and so I practically lived off of KD, frozen pizzas and leftovers. This year I have yet to purchase KD or a single frozen pizza, so I figured I would give in and by perogies, which is kind of the other typical bachelor meal- or so I hear. But man were the tasty.

Bedtime Blogging- Part II

It's Tuesday night, you'd probably think Jeff would be back in Camrose, tucked in his own bed, safe and sound. Well, you'd be wrong. I'm still here- however I am leaving tomorrow for sure. Assuming the car starts. And continues to run.

I have to say I've definately enjoyed my extended stay in Saskatoon despite the frustrations. Austen and I took it nice and easy today spending some time outside in the bitter cold and enjoying a lasagna sent directly from Calgary. Watching "Back to the Future" helped pass the time and ease the stress on my relationship with Zane from the Ford dealership.

We also enjoyed the Victoria Secret Fashion show with the Buffaloberry girls. Hooray for Heidi Klum. Kudos to the Spice Girls for a stellar performance despite age and good on them for wearing comparatively modest clothing. Spice up your life! We also caught Nicola smoking pot. Only Nicola, no one else had any. She had a stash in her sock drawer. Beside her Victoria Secret underwear. POT HEAD! We tried to persuade her otherwise, but she would have none of it. In fact, she became quite aggressive. Austen has the claw marks to prove it. Strange how mind altering drugs do that to some people. Hopefully that angel of a sister Sheena won't follow in her pitiful sister's footsteps.

Good News......

the car started! however, it is currently not running and I am still in Saskatoon. I left the car running for over an hour while we had some lunch with Austen, Tabby and Heather (and Parker of course) and I'm assuming it wore the battery right out. The car died on a very busy intersection just before I attempted to turn left. Thankfully a nice gentleman in a half-ton pushed us into a parking lot. From there the tow truck took us out to the Ford dealership where the bird currently sits. They might get to it today. So the joint blogging continues for another day. Parker is overly anxious to get back home so Jim (his dad) is on his way out to pick him up and drive back tonight! Yowsers.

On a lighter note, Austen is now done school (besides finals). Happiness abounds. So now we eat drink and be merry for tomorrow I leave- supposedly.

We are waiting patiently (t minus 33 minutes) for Arrested Development to come on the TV. Now, I love the Office, it's incredible, but A.D. is the funniest show of all time hands down. Watch it. Now. From the beginning.

bedtime blogging

2 posts in one day!

It's 11:30 here, and Jeff and I are lounging in bed. you may ask yourself, "how is this possible? I thought Jeff was going home to camrose tongiht? Won't he miss school? and Dean?" Well friends, the answer is yes, he will miss school, and work. Unfortunately the bird (his car) which has remained moderately faithful for 5ish years, refused to start for hours, despite the best efforts of many smart men, including CAA. SO... jeff and parker's trip home has been postponed indefinitely... perhpas they will never return. okay that's not entirely true, they are going home tomorrow, car and all. thanks to some quick thinking by our elders, we acquired a battery charger, and things are looking up!

Jeff is thankful for one more night of sweet, luscious pillow talk with austen, and parker is thankful that he doesn't have to work in the bitter cold tomorrow.

so. here we are together again in Saskatoon. it's been a lovely weekend full of coffee, cigarettes and beer. and fellowship. it's Sunday afternoon and Austen and I doing what we do best, we are where everyone should be on a Sunday afternoon, in bed.

You all missed an exceptional first Sunday in Advent service at Augustana Lutheran Church.

The trip out was fine except a slight delay in Battleford when the bird didn't feel like starting again. Luckily a nice young man was willing to give Parker and myself a charge and we were on our way. Friday we stayed in and enjoyed a very nice sheesha session with one miss tabitha (sister silva, if you will) and Kjel. It extended late into the night.

Saturday involved brunch at Olympia (a staple of this group) and a viewing of "Across the Universe" which is so incredible words fail to give it proper adoration. Everyone (Heather, Tabby, Parker, Jeff and Austen) would say that the first part of the day was most satisfactory. After an insightful, thought provoking and intimate chat with Auntie Noella we (Parker, Jeff, Austen) had a little supper at the Freehouse and headed out to Winston's for a few rounds (finding Graham, Tabby and Heather- also Aeden Chan). We found ourselves at the girls' house for quite some time before returning home for some much needed pillow talk.

And after church and nutricious lunch at Wendy's here we are. loving life until we are separated once again. The weekend was superb and it sucks for you if you weren't a part of it. maybe next go around.

I love blogging. I don't know why I ever stopped.

As you can see, without Jeff, this would probably never have happened. That's how it is with a lot of things in my life and Jeff. If he wasn't there to remind me or spur me on to do things, they wouldn't get done. ever. It makes my life a lot harder when we aren't "together". Camrose is bearable, but i can't really do much further than that without becoming a trainwreck.

I would like to point out the amount of contractions i'm using. i'm a big fan. i've been writing so many "professional" essays that i've lost the joy of using them. therefore in this "unprofessional" blog i shall contract.

something out of character for me is to stay up really late and finish papers. this is not to be confused with procrastinating, which is not out of character for me. i usually procrastinate pretty bad, but get shit done with some time to spare. but at the end of this semester i had 3 big papers due in 2 weeks, and for whatever reason, i was up till 5 in the morning finishing two of them, and 2am for the other. anyhow, last night was a late one, so here i am at school running on two hours of sleep. feels good. BUT i handed in my last paper, so i do feel fine.

jeff and parker are coming to visit this weekend, if you're in saskatoon you better check them out, this doesn't happen every day!

It's Been A Long Cold, Lonely Winter

Yesterday Ryan Adams' new CD came out. I purchased it and it is wonderful. I am probably biased because I'm a big fan, but the record is really terrific. Definately his best since Heartbreaker, which came out in 2000. So go out and buy it.

As most of you know, I'm an uncle. My brother Kevin and his wife Brooke had their first child back in October, Harrison. Harrison is smiley and chubby and I swear there is not a picture of him where is mouth is closed. (and there is LOTS of pictures of this kid) Now, I'm the youngest so I was fairly used to a lot of attention and once Harrison came along the attention did shift quite dramatically (get ready, Heather), but I have learned to cope with it. This picture was taken today, he's looking up at my mom's mom.

as some of you know, i (austen) am occasionaly known to make boarderline racist comments. i assure all of you i am most certainly not racist. i totally believe in treating everyone equally, and i am just as down on whites as any other group. i often make a lot of these comments when i am with tabitha, naturally because of the color of her skin. (i suppose this is sounding worse and worse if you are not on the inside track with tabitha and mines relationship. - i assure you it is all in good taste and no feelings are hurt. ever. too badly.) anyway, she is always telling me that "one of these days you are going to get yourself in trouble!" the following story is that day:
Graham and Chad stopped over last night on their way to south america. me being the good host i am, gave them Chili, showed them a good time, and gave them a bed to sleep in. (this is of course in calgary - so really when i say i did all that i mean my mom) so i took them downtown to Eu Claire market to look around. after we were finished, we all three had to pee. after we had done the deed, and were washing at the sink, i said to Graham - "I told you it's all Asians who work there!" refering to the previous store which is called Emilios, but is in fact run by asains. immediately following the utterance of these words, an asain came out of one of the stalls. as soon as i heard the door open - without looking i knew it was an asain. it was too perfect a situation for it not to be. i looked down at my hands, and caught him out of the corner of my eye - asian! not only asian, but asian gang looking - scary. i tried to play it off to graham by saying something quiter like, "ya, it must have been his brother" or some none sense, in a vain effort to throw him off. needless to say we made a quick exit before he could call his counterparts.

The other day I indulged in the Kit Kat blizzard. Now, it should be made known that America has several blizzard options that Canada does not have and vise versa. So, I don't know if the Kit Kat variety is available above the border, but if it is, go to a Dairy Queen today, get one and reward yourself because it's Monday.

Crazy Cathy

Does anyone remember (during our first year) when Heather would be like, "Where's Cathy? Has anybody seen her? Carolyn, I think we forgot Cathy." I do. And I thought it was pretty funny. But good news, I found her!

As some of you may know, instead of getting a real job this semester I started teaching guitar. I have two students, one of whom is my cousin's son and they live in Rothsay which is about a half an hour away. So every Monday I drive out there and they feed me, pay me and give me leftovers, it's a pretty sweet deal. One particular Monday, a couple of weeks ago (the 2nd) I had to haul ass back to Moorhead because I was going to do a lesson for my other student at like 7ish. So I'm getting on the interstate to go back to Moorhead when I see this lady walking up the on-ramp. I always feel bad when I pass people who are stranded on the side of the road because I typically have time to help but once I notice them I'm always too far along to go back and help them- so I figured this was my golden opportunity to help someone. After confirming there was nobody right behind me I backed up the on-ramp and asked this lady if she needed some help and she asked me if I was going to Fargo, and indeed I was (Fargo- Moorhead it's like the same place) ANYWAYS, she hops in and away we go. This lady is wearing like a jean-jacket and jeans and shoes with no socks- no mitts, no toque. It wasn't at all warm probably like 5ish, and the next day it snowed a whole bunch. So on our trip back we talked a little bit and apparently this lady, Cathy, is just a vagabond. Travels around, no home, just does whatever. What I didn't understand is that she had already been in Fargo that morning, and had forgotten her luggage and now needed to go back and get it- so I don't know how she got to where I picked her up. Anyways, I brought her out to the Petro station and offered her the lasagna that my cousin had given me, but she passed because she had given up meat for lent, but she did take one of the monster cookies. I prayed for her and then away she went, she said she was headed back to the west coast.

i have a 10 day break from exams. i use the term break loosely, as it is not really a break, but i do not actually have any exams in that time. so i want to do something i've been wanting do to for sometime, but its just been too dang busy, dang it. so jeff and i are music lovers and wish to impose our beliefs on you. so every once and a while, hopefully semi-regularily, we want to post what we are listening to, a "playlist" if you will.

Martin Sexton

Wow. I just got back from an INCREDIBLE concert. Martin Sexton, he's this singer-songwriter type, with a rockin' voice and a talent for storytelling. I only knew about five songs of his before the show, but it did not matter. He just rocks. It was such a fun show- and he covered Johnny Cash- so you got to love that.

I want to start this off by saying i am no english major, nor do i have a handle on the english language. BUT, it does drive me crazy when people are sloppy. This is something that Jeffrey and I have spent many a time bitching about. Yes, it can sometimes be confusing as to when one should use its or it's, your or you're, they're/their/there, accept or except. But if you are planning on paying a lot of money for a big sign for your car dealership in Wetaskawin, get it right

When Jeff and I drove by this we nearly lost our lunch. we also felt is was a great opportunity to show how dumb Wetaskawin is (sorry marina).

Winter Blues

I understand that all of you in Saskatoon got an unreal amount of snow this year. And I'm under the impression that most of it is still around. However, the real beauty of winter in glorious prairies where we all reside is the unpredictability.

When I returned to Minnesota after my holiday to Canada, I was surprised to see that virtually all the snow was gone. This was of course quite pleasant and the temperatures were accordingly warm and very nice- I even busted out the vest for most of the first couple weeks of class. Last Monday it was 81 (about 25C) in Minneapolis, now we are covered in about 6 inches of snow. I absolutely hated my life when I walked to school this morning.

It started Sunday when it snowed most of the day, but that all pretty much melted yesterday. Today it came back with a vengeance. AND my window was open last night, so now I can't close it all the way. We didn't get a white Christmas, so we'll have to settle for a white Easter.

It is our goal here at "The Continuing adventures of Jeff and Austen" to make your day brighter. And since Mondays typically suck, it is of extreme importance to us to get you through the first day back from the weekend. We want to try and make your Mondays better by sharing a funny anecdote or perhaps a comical video with you. We do not promise to be 100% punctual or consistent, but we will sure try. So hopefully this little story from my weekend will make your chuckle.

This past weekend I (Jeff) was at Pracs Institute to test some drug that is in the experimental stage having to do with blockage in the blood vessels or something. Basically I got paid a lot of money to eat, sleep, watch movies, do my homework and get my blood drawn a bunch of times. They do tell us about some side effects we may encounter including: heart failure, inability to sleep, sleepiness, tooth ache, the list goes on, big deal. But what they don't tell us about is the dumb asses we have to put up with. We are divided up into to sleeping rooms that are very large and have like 15 bunk beds, and the guys that were next to me had brought a TV, PS2, some games a movie- which is fine, whatever. They were so annoying. The one guy had this voice that drove me up the wall and he complained nonstop and kept swearing at his video game the whole time because he sucked at it. I was like, "Buddy, if you suck so bad, just quit, are you retarded?" I didn't really say that of course, but if I had......... And apparently they rented the Prestige or the Illusionist or both, which I've heard are good, haven't seen them myself, some sort of magician movies or something. So the same genius that's telling his game to f- off asks one of his friends, "Was the magic in the Illusionist real?" I about jumped off my bad and slapped him in face. REAL MAGIC? It's a movie! Wow. I sometimes can't believe how dumb people are. And that was today's funny story. Thanks for reading.

computer woes

let me start off by saying that i (Austen) have a 10 page paper i should be doing instead of this. but i feel guilty for starting a blog, and not blogging regularily. thats weird. funny story as to why i am writing this paper now:
when Jeff came to visit, i neglected my studies, big deal. i knew i had some papers to do, but i THOUGHT they were all due at the end of the month, like 27th-ish. which is true for 2 out of 3. unfortunately i misread the 1o page research paper due date, it was due on tuesday the 22nd. so i had to ask for an extension and write it in 2 days. not too bad since i had the research mostly done, just needed to throw it together. worked tuesday for a bit, and then left the rest till wednesday night. i really got going, and was in the zone. you know when you are writing, and its just going good? i was there. decided to take a little break, have some food. saved the paper. saw that there were some updates to do, so i clicked "ok". when they were done, it said i needed to restart, no big deal, this is common. unfortunately for me, that would be the last time that night my computer worked. after i hit "restart" it did not restart. in fact it would go to the first "loading page" where the circle spins, and that is all. i spent two hours in vain trying to figure out why it would not go. you can imagine my anxiety level at this point. the phrase, "is this actually happening to me?" floated through my head a lot that night. finally i called it a night. the next morning (this morning), i took it into the campus computer store, and 8 hours later, fixed! they said that i shouldn't have left programs running while updating. whatever. point of the story - don't buy a mac! JUST KIDDING, do buy a mac, but don't be a dumbass like me. the whole reason i bought a mac is because i thought they were crash proof. little did i know i could make it crash, good on ya austen.

Debut

So I (Jeff) have been in Canada now over a week. I'm leaving in about eight hours (because it's late) and Austen and I decided we better get this blog up and running so that we can join the cool kids club.

Hopefullly we will keep this blog updated fairly regularly despite the vast (land) distance between us. Please bear with us as we are rookies in the blog world and are still "learning the ropes" of blogging etiquette.
